“Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?” (II Chronicles 13:5)
The covenant of salt means “forever; everlasting covenant”. To understand the implications of this covenant, you must have a clear understanding of the essential characteristics or qualities of the substance called salt.
Firstly, Salt is a cleanser. Generally, Salt adds taste to food, but it is used to wash away the slimy mucus from snails and also to cleanse fish. Spiritually, Salt makes sacrifices holy and acceptable.Leviticus 2:13, the Bible says: “… with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.” Ezekiel 43:22-24:“And on the second day you shall offer a kid of the goats without blemish for a sin offering… as they did cleanse it with the bullock … thou shalt offer a young bullock without blemish, and a ram out of the flock without blemish, the priest shall cast salt upon them” In the Old Testament, the sin offering usually involved a goat, a bullock and a ram. However, for any sin offering to be accepted, it must be cleansed and salted.
This is also applicable in the New Testament Mark 9:49 b, “… and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.”
In conformity to this principle, the Apostle Paul says: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” (Rom. 12:1) It is salt that makes a sacrifice acceptable. If your body is a sacrifice, then it must be salted meaning the sacrifice of your body must be cleansed with salt. Not necessarily by physical bath but inwardly by keeping your heart pure. (Prov. 4:23). Also David said, Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against you”. To be salted therefore is to depart from iniquity it means to live a cleansed life.
You may be making sacrifices as a believer but if your life has not been cleansed, God cannot accept your sacrifices. You must be salted.
