And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 1 Sam.17:26
Our text tells an interesting story of a battle between Israelites and the Philistines. Goliath was the hero of the Philistines and he was against the nation of Israel. At the battlefield, Goliath boastfully stood and shouted, “Anybody that can withstand me in a fight, let him come here and show me what he has” but no one from the Israeli camp was brave enough to challenge the taunts from Goliath. At that moment a young Israelite by name David coincidentally walked into the battlefield. “What is happening?” David apparently asked.
When he was told David was moved to ask, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine…?” he used his definition to box Goliath into a corner. David knew circumcision was a mark of covenant and also knew that Goliath was not circumcised. In other words, Goliath had no covenant with God. David looked at his brothers and asked, “Why do you flee before this man? In other words, why should you, who have a covenant with God, run away from a man who has none?”
In verse 46, after Goliath had made a lot of noise; David, a sixteen year old boy locked horns with Goliath, who was about 40 years of age and over 10 feet tall. David said to him, “This day I will smite you. I will beat you silly. This day I will cut off your head, and not only will I do so, I will also feed the blood of all the Philistines with you to the birds of the air.”
The difference between David and his brothers was not knowledge, because David and his brothers, being Jews, all knew the same thing about God’s covenant with Israel. The difference was in their understanding of the covenant with God. You cannot act on what you do not understand. The fact that you say, “I bind you in the name of Jesus,” does not mean you are acting on it. You activate the covenant (be it the covenant of health, wealth, security) that you know by a deep seated understanding through meditation on God’s word and by taking a bold step to work in line with the covenants. The devil knows when you understand what you say. You can activate the covenant when you have no doubts about God’s promises and boldly claim the promise.
