Giving birth in churches is a popular practice in Cross Rivers State, Nigeria, where many women believe that a house of God will offer them more protection during childbirth than a modern medical facility.
A new campaign has begun to stop it, because traditional birth attendants don’t have formal medical training and only have access to very basic equipment.
Many women can die from complications during childbirth.
While a bill is currently before the state parliament to outlaw the practice of church births, Dr Linda Ayade, the wife of the state governor is spearheading the campaign to persuade mothers that health clinics are safer options.
