“And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongethto Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee”.
(1 Kings 17:8-9)There was famine in the land for two years. There was no food in the land because the bible says the brook dried up. The bird which brought food for the man of God was not coming any longer. Then God said to him, “…Go to Zarephath, there is a woman there who will sustain you.” The truth of the matter is that Elijah was going there to sustain her. God creates a problem in church, so that He would use you to meet the needs of the church and at the same time solve your problems.
Elijah went to Zarephath. When he got there, the Bible says that at the gate of the city the woman was there picking wood and Elijahjah told her, “…Go home and bring me water for me to drink.” Obediently, this widow went without considering the weakness in her body because of hunger. While the woman was going to fetch the water, Elijah called her back and requested for bread. The woman replied him and said she came to pick two sticks to prepare the small flour and oil that is remaining in the house and that she and her son would eat and die, for there was no more food left in the house. However, the woman said if you say so then I will go and I will make you that bread.
Your service to God should be unconditional, even in the face of trials and temptation. Serve God with your whole life and substance not caring what people will say or how they will mock you. The solution and rest to your problems is in God.
In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls”.
The yoke referred is the church. Jesus Christ is saying drop the world. Put it down and carry the church. There is nothing you do for the church that is unrewarding. You can never be a loser when you decide to serve God with your life, with your substances and with everything you have because the God we serve is a mighty God.
The (widow) woman’s act of sacrifice opened doors of blessings for her. Her heavy burden was taken off her shoulder because she bore the burden of the man of God. She was not discouraged by the fact that she gave her last meal to another without any hope of the next meal for herself and her son. This faith is so great. God can never let your labour of love to go unrewarded.
You may be overwhelmed by your troubles, heavy of sorrow and deep in thoughts, with no space or interest to do the works of God. Do not be discouraged. Lay it at the altar and receive your rest. You must understand that as the Lord my God liveth God will make a way in the wilderness. He will make water come out in the desert. When you are in the ocean he will not allow you to be consumed by it. The devils flood will not drown you. The hand of God will rest upon you, in your job, business, marriage, academics and in your life.
